There will be many things going on in June at Discovery's library!
First of all, our final Scholastic Book flyer has gone home from the library to students in Div. 2 - 12. All orders placed using account code RC196303 are due online by Thursday, June 8th and will qualify for free shipping to the school for distribution by Mrs. Brockhurst before the end of the school year. Red Cedar readers have voted for their reader's choice selections at the end of May and provincial winners will be announced on June 10th! Watch our Red Cedar page for the official announcement after that date. We had a very successful 2nd Scholastic Book Fair at the beginning of May which benefitted our school in many ways: free books for classroom libraries, free books for our library, and money for book purchases from other suppliers as well! Thank you for all your support! The final weeks will see rewards for returning all library books by June 15th and for using book bags all year, the Library Monitors' year end celebration (date to be announced), as well as the closing of the library after June 15th so Mrs. Brockhurst can complete inventory. There will be no more classes visiting the library after this date.

We've had an incredibly busy autumn so far in our active library learning commons!
We have had over 50 students volunteer to become library monitors this year!! The grade 6 and 7 library monitors have begun their work supervising the library during Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday lunch breaks. It took about a month for that number of library monitors to be trained in all aspects of this work, but we are happily operational at this point. I'm so impressed that there are so many helpful student who are willing to give up their time and energy to our library! We had an incredibly successful Book Fair in October! Thank you to everyone who came and for all the purchases which benefit our whole school in the form of Scholastic credits, free books and a cash return so we can purchase from booksellers other than Scholastic. We took in over $7000 in gross sales!! That is the largest total I've ever seen. Another bit of excitement coming up for the grade 6 and 7’s is the anticipated start of the Red Cedar Book Awards Club. I have just received all of this year’s nominees and look forward to presenting this opportunity to our students to become critical readers as soon as the books are ready to circulate. Students will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite and participate in a provincial reader’s choice award for two Canadian authors in May! The school year is coming to a close... still a few things to do to get ready for a wonderful summer break...
Remember to return any library materials that are still signed out on your account. They are overdue and will need to be paid for if they cannot be returned. If you do need to make a payment, Mrs. Brockhurst can receive cash but cheques need to be made out to Discovery Elementary, with the note "Library books" on the subject line. Red Cedar voting has now been tallied! The winners in both categories were by the SAME AUTHOR! I don't think this has ever happened before. Well done, readers who completed this challenge and were able to vote! Check on the RED CEDAR page of this website to see who the winner was... The Grade Sevens are getting ready for their graduation day celebrations as will the Kindergarten children. Change is never easy, and we will miss all the students who are leaving Discovery, but we wish everyone well in their next school year, wherever it may be! On a final note: The Discovery House points have been tallied and in ascending order we have: Falcons in 4th place, Owls in 3rd place, Ravens in 2nd place, and winning this year... Hawks in 1st place! Change the banners to GREEN! Congratulations!!
