Well, we've made it to the end of the most unexpected school year ever! This will be my last update for the Discovery LLC website until next September.
On the Literacy Links pages: The Grade6/7 will find a rap-style version of Dr. Seuss' Oh the Places You'll Go. The Grade 4/5s will find a very entertaining story read by Chris O'Dowd about a doughnut who doesn't want to be eaten, Arnie the Doughnut. The Grade 2/3s will find an animated award-winning story by William Steig: Sylvester and the Magic Pebble. The Grade K/1s will find The Very Quiet Cricket, written and illustrated by Eric Carle. There is one more Chess Puzzle of the Week for you to challenge yourselves with and the Red Cedar voting has now been tallied! On the Red Cedar page, you will find links to 2 videos revealing this year's winners for both Fiction and Information book categories! The Grade Sevens have had their graduation day celebrations as have the Kindergarten children. Change is never easy, and we will miss all the students who are leaving Discovery, but we wish everyone well in their next school year, wherever it may be! On a final note: The Discovery House points have been tallied and in ascending order we have: Falcons in 4th place, Ravens in 3rd place, Hawks in 2nd place, and winning this year... Owls in 1st place! Congratulations!! Have a wonderful summer, and keep reading!

Is this June or is it "Junuary"? We are in the middle of a wet, grey, cool month so far, but when the sun comes out and heats things up we are comforted that summer is just around the corner! This week on our website you'll find some wonderful stories to listen to and watch.
The grade 6/7s will find Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters, an African folk tale told by John Steptoe, with stunning illustrations and a wonderful message. This is a book I often read to this grade group at school. The grade 4/5s will find a link to Stone Soup, by Jon J. Muth, a retelling of a classic story about the value of sharing, and the idea that we are stronger together than when we are apart. The grade 2/3s will find a great story called The World Needs More Purple People, written by Kristen Bell and Benjamin Hart, illustrated by Daniel Wiseman. The Grade K/1s will find a funny story, Harry the Dirty Dog, written by Gene Zion, illustrated by Margaret Bloy Graham, and read by Betty White. Please leave me a comment, question or message on the Contact Page and I'll be sure to answer you! It has been an interesting first week back for some students, while others continue their learning at home. Things have been going well with everyone being very responsible by keeping their 2 m. distance and washing hands at the right times throughout the day.
This week our focus is on LISTENING. On the Literacy Links pages the grade 1s and Kindies will find Stephanie's Ponytail, by Robert Munsch, as well as a link to Robert Munsch's website where he has recordings of his own readings of several stories to listen to. The grade 2/3s will find a link to Mable Murple's Popping Purple Wordspinning World, podcasts of Sheree Fitch's poetry for some fun listening. The grades 4-7s will find on their pages a podcast link to My Kids Locker, Covid19EDU, a variety of interesting stories and messages for intermediate students to enjoy listening to. Red Cedar is now finished for the year. We will share the results of voting on this website as soon as they are available. If you have any comments, questions or book reviews that you'd like to share, please send them to me on the Contact page. I'd love to hear from you and post your reviews and book recommendations on our website! We are entering our final month of what has been a very different school year! We will be welcoming a portion of our students back to campus for classes on some days of the week, and as I said in my last post, I will be endeavouring to keep the Library Learning Commons website updated on a weekly basis, especially for the students and families who are continuing their learning at home. The library is closed for book exchange for the rest of the year, but teachers can still access books for their classrooms until June 25th, when all library materials should be returned.
This week on our Literacy Links pages, you will find Michelle Obama sharing a lovely story called Miss Maple's Seeds on the K/1 page, Chris Pine is reading Clark the Shark for the grade 2/3s, Sean Astin (Sam in Lord of the Rings) is reading A Bad Case of Stripes for the grade 4/5s, and the grade 6/7s have a link to I Value Canadian, some wonderful podcasts by Canadian authors for children and young adults (including Eric Walters, Monique Gray Smith, Susin Nielsen, among others) talking about their inspiration and creative process along with their ideas about the Canadian experience. Enjoy!! |
