Happy Easter weekend! Happy Passover! Happy Holi! Happy Ramadan!
April, and the spring season in general, are full of special days and celebrations, no matter which ones you and your families celebrate. We can all appreciate the lengthening hours of sunshine, the warmer temperatures and the newly greening landscape around us, not to mention the wonderful colours and fragrances of the blossoms on trees and in gardens. As for Library news, the most recent Scholastic flyer has been given out to all the classes from Division 2 to 12. Our next Book Fair will happen in November 2022, so if you are wanting to buy books to benefit our school before then, please take a look at the flyer and also see what's online. Remember, there is free shipping for orders over $40! Our classroom code is needed for your orders to benefit our school's library: RC196303 The library has reopened at lunch break time! Many students are taking advantage of this and are enjoying coming into the library at lunchtime to read, colour or play board games. I'd like to say a huge thank you to my Library Monitors who have continued helping with many library jobs throughout the school year, who are also excited to be again supervising the students who come in. The Red Cedar reading club is heading towards the finish line. Voting will happen in May this year and many students have already completed their reading goal to enable them to participate in the voting process. I'm still encouraging all the readers to keep reading until the very end, in case they haven't yet read the book that may become their favourite! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please contact me at the school or on the contact page of this website. Thanks for your continued support and for taking the time to read with your children at home.

Welcome back to school Discovery!
The winter break went by very quickly, followed by an unusual start-up with the teachers at school but the majority of students not starting until the second week. CoVid restrictions have tightened up again and we are doing everything we can to keep everyone safe and healthy! We had a fun competition in December decorating classroom doors for the holiday season. The winners were as follows: Primary winner: Ms. Burr's class Primary tie for 2nd: Mr. Brockhurst, Mrs. Salmon, Mrs. Symes' classes Intermediate winner: Div. 7 Mrs. Law's class Intermediate tie for 2nd: Div. 2 Mrs. C. Smith & Div. 6 Mr. Millar's classes The Red Cedar Club is going strong. We have 16 avid readers plowing through the nominated books in both the Fiction and Non-Fiction section of this year's reader's choice award program. Voting will take place in early May and any club member who has read the required 5 books in either category will be eligible to vote. Keep reading everyone! January Scholastic flyers have been sent home to the Divisions who participate through the library (Div. 2 - 12). Any orders placed will need the code RC196303, and will be delivered directly to your home address. Happy winter everyone!! Hello Discovery Community!
Finally, I have a few moments to spend creating an update to our Library Learning Commons Blog. We've had a very busy first two months of school, and with Terry Fox Run, Orange Shirt Day, Thanksgiving and Halloween all behind us now, we have the next two months, including Remembrance Day, a virtual Book Fair, and lots of learning to squeeze in ahead before we have our winter break, starting on December 18th. Library Monitors have started their training to do this important job. We have five groups of helpers who will be volunteering their time at lunch recess to help with many jobs in our library learning commons, including supervising groups of students to come into the library at lunch recess on a scheduled basis. Our Virtual Book Fair is going to be during the week of November 22 - 26th. More details will be coming and as soon as I have the website link I'll share it here on our website. We are also looking forward to the arrival of our new pottery kiln, which should be any day now! It will be exciting for the students to be able to do some creative work with clay in the near future. Our last month of the 2020/21 School YearWell here we are at the end of another school year - a year with its share of challenges and safety regulations we have all had to work with. Hopefully it has been a good year for everyone here at Discovery!
All student library materials are due back by next Friday, June 11th, unless special permission has been arranged with Mrs. Brockhurst. An overdue list will be printed off early the following week and given to teachers for the first follow-up on overdue books. Rewards for book bags will be coming to students before the end of the year, and we will have a celebration for the Library Monitor teams who have so generously given their lunch break times to help Mrs. Brockhurst with all the shelving! The Red Cedar readers had their voting day in the library in the middle of May. The winners were announced online last week and are as follows: Non-Fiction Book Award Winner: It Began with a Page, by Kyo Maclear Fiction Award Winner: The Unteachables by Gordon Korman. CONGRATULATIONS again to all the Red Cedar readers! We had our own announcement celebration in the Library earlier this month. Make sure you check out the Summer Reading Club with the Vancouver Island Regional Library, online at www.virl.bc.ca/sr, to keep your students' reading skills active over the summer break! Enjoy the holiday and I look forward to seeing you all back in the library next September! |
